Does The Secret Work ?

It is no secret. They just restated the law of attraction, got a few “experts” to talk about it, put it in a pretty package, built a provocative little trailer for it (how the rich and powerful are trying to hide the secret from us, as if there were anything to hide) and got a spot on Opra. A good solid marketing scheme. It’s working very well for them too, I bought the DVD and liked it! I must have watched it four or five times, its good. It does communicate the ideas effectively, yet it falls short. It presents the law of attraction as if it will work for you instantly with little effort. Most people will give it a try andĀ fail because things won’t change quickly enough. They will forget about he secret and move on. If you take the information the secret gives you, and then make it your intention to do A LOT more research, you will definitely get somewhere. If you expect the secret to give you all the techniques you need to be happy you will be disappointed. Writing down that you are going to receive $20,000 is not going to make it appear, I’m sorry.
I have been studying self help for 30 years. I’m not rich, I don’t make thousands of dollars a month blogging and I have not magically manifested anything into my life that I didn’t have to work toward. I am a very happy person. I have a great wife and wonderful kids, I own a house (still have a mortgage), I have a good job that pays me well and I have a creative outlet that I hope is helping people (this blog). I have credit debt, and sometimes I get caught in the rain! That’s life.
Lately, self help has become all about money. The great teachers and profits throughout history who spoke of the techniques commonly practiced in self help efforts did not mention money, their focus was on joy. Today in our western world too many people, especially young people, equate joy with the accumulation of wealth; bling around your neck and a pimped-out Escalade in your driveway. So it’s no surprise that we flock to the secret when we hear that watching a DVD and reading a book can manifest wealth into our lives! Its true, it is very nice to have lots of money. Money can get us all the stuff we need and all the stuff we would like to have. I’m not down on accumulating wealth at all; I sure could be better at it! It sounds cliched of course, but money will not make you happy. But say that to people in poverty, or deeply in debt, or who had just lost their job and they will laugh at you because money would make them happy. It makes us happy to be able to feed our kids, have a roof over our head and rent a movie if we would like to.
The secret does work, the principles are sound, and with some effort I’m certain people will enjoy success in their lives through applying the advice found in the secret. But I believe it takes a bit more effort than the producers of the secret would seem to admit. I have a problem with the ostentatious manner in which it is presented. That being said, it is getting an important message out, and for that the makers of the secret are to be commended.
I am writing my opinion here; feel free to comment and leave your opinion for others to see. If the secret worked wonders for you let me know, I would love to hear from someone who got instant results from the secret.

Dennis I really have enjoyed your site thus far. It is a good thing you’ve got going on here. Thanks for the follow on Twitter by the way.
I just had a conversation with a woman today who has completely changed her HEALTH around due to the principles of the secret and the law of attraction. True joy and true self development applies to all areas of life, wealth being just one of them. I think so many people think that if they can just obtain wealth, that everything else will fall into place. That could not be further from the truth. Everything else must already be in place. Wealth may aid in the perfecting of those things but will not bring them about.
Thanks for the post. I am a firm believer in the law of attraction.
It is amazing how the law of attraction is simplified by the DVD the Secret. You are so right that it has been brought to the masses in order to monetize this concept and this powerful law. The secret is great for opening the eyes of many, but it leaves out a huge step.. the action. It doesn’t focus on the action someone has to take in order to get what they want. Thanks for the blog post!

Great post! Thank you for sharing your views an opinions! For me The Secret led to a whole bunch of research … it was a milestone and roadmarker along my journey! Indeed, I agree that it is not an entirely balanced representation … a lot comes down to action … and let’s not forget the law of responsibility! I do agree though that it’s fabulously packaged and presented and it has opened the doorway for masses, and that in itself is worth loads … a bit like planting a seed - you know, beginings have to be made somewhere, it may as well be a beautifully packaged “secret”

Bingo! You hit the nail on the head with ‘the law of responsibility’. Without being responsible we can really expect nothing.
