What are those ads that appear at the top, sides and bottoms of many web sites and blogs? Those are contextual ads placed by webmasters to monetize their sites and blogs. Google Adsense has been offering these ads to webmasters for quite a while now; Yahoo has just come onboard recently with the Yahoo Publisher Network.

I am going to explain these ads based on a , but the principles are the same for any web site. As a web surfer whenever you click on one of these ads the blogger gets a few pennies, but it takes literally thousands of clicks for a blogger to make any decent . The ads are contextually inserted on a page by the Google or Yahoo robots, this means that robots crawl the and only place ads that are relevant to the content of the post with which the ads will be displayed. It’s quite amazing really how sophisticated the crawlers are, they are incredibly accurate! When you are finished reading the post you can check out the ads for relevant topics; when you click them you will be taken to another site for further information regarding that topic. When you do this you are actually paying the blogger for the information you just read; not much, but it does add up over time.

The ads are generally purchased by other web sites that are trying to drive traffic to their site. Now-a-days many of us are purchasing products over the internet, and why not, it is safe convenient and quick. The ads that we click will take us places that have products we may be interested in based on what we were viewing in the post we came from. So don’t be offended by these ads. Bloggers are just trying to make a bit of for their efforts and I that they should be compensated for their . Personally, I learn a huge amount from the blogs that I visit and I do contribute by clicking, it’s the least I can offer in exchange for that valuable information. Often I will even donate if it’s a I come back to regularly; many blogs have a donate with paypal button.

If you are just staring out as a blogger you can monetize your with Google Adsense or Yahoo Publisher Network ads and earn a bit of cash! It takes quite a while to build a following and get the clicks. Many people are annoyed by adsense ads and make it their personal policy never to click on them; but maybe they should reconsider their position and realize that those ads are helping the person they just took some free information from!

As a blogger or publisher you are not allowed to convince people to click your ads, nor are you allowed to click your own ads; these practices will get you banned! It is probably not even a good idea to tell your friends to click your ads if they are sharing the same internet provider as you. Google is extremely sophisticated and is probably aware of much more than any of use realizes involving internet traffic patterns and trends.

So throw some ads on your and see what happens. Good luck with making some  from your !
