Expect Good Things

happinessWhy not wake up in the morning with the expectation of wonderment? Why not rise and say to ourselves, “I wonder what great things are going to happen today?” I find that when I do this I actually get butterflies in my stomach: that feeling of anticipation I used to get so often when I was a kid, when I was expecting something really fun to happen with my day. Try to remember summer vacation when you were about eight years old? Cast your mind back to those warm breezy mornings when you would naturally wake up round 7:00 am, see the dappled sunlight on your bedroom wall as the early morning sun shone through the leaves of the maple trees outside your window, hear the sparrows chattering, stretch, yawn and then bolt out of bed with excitement and anticipation fully knowing that you were going to have a really good day. I remember those days well and it almost chokes me up with nostalgia as I think back on the pure joy experienced back then. Thinking about those beautiful days makes me smile but it also makes me sad in a way: sad because I had wasted so many years wrapped up in -indulgent bitterness since then, blind to the beauty displayed in front of my eyes each day. I allowed my petty daily problems to replace my joy. I ruminated on this pettiness so often that it readily replaced my innate expectation of good with the foreboding dread of: what bill am I going to get in the mail today, how snarled will the freeway be this morning, what crap is the boss going to lay on me when I show up for . Many of us, I would actually say that most of us, allow our thoughts to be consumed with this trash talking dialogue all day long; it often even shows up in our dreams! The obvious question is, why? Why do we choose to fill our thoughts with the expectation of strife and lack rather than joy and abundance? It really is absurd. I can’t read the future, can you? I have no idea what-so-ever if the freeway will be jammed up or not, I am just assuming it. I am assuming it based on the past, but the past is gone and today is a new and different time. Why not say to yourself, “the drive to today will be quick and easy and pleasant

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not promoting some airy-fairy notion that if you simply say it, it will magically happen. No, that traffic may be as snarled up as ever, but when you have the of expecting good things you will simply your situation differently. You will notice the good things around you, the courteous driver that slows her car to let you change lanes, the rising sun, the good taste of your morning coffee. You will relax and cooperate with the other drivers, and the otherwise stressful morning commute may eventually become an enjoyable relaxing time in your day. Maybe instead of dreading your daily peek in the mailbox expecting the next bill, a cheque or a package from a friend or relative. At least if you good mail, you won’t be so upset when you do get a phone bill. Your mindset will be in a pleasing space, and when the bills come you won’t give it a second thought; you’ll just realize that you are paying for the convenience and usefulness of your phone, something that would be really tough to be without. Why not give it a try? good things every minute of every day. Get back the excitement, anticipation and wonderment of, what’s next? Waking up in the morning is like unwrapping a present. I wonder what wonderful things will happen today!
