Creative Visualization

Creative Visualization, is the title of a wonderful little book by Shakti Gawain. I was in the bookstore today putting in some time while my daughter was getting her hair cut and I saw a copy of the book down low on a shelf in the self improvement section; a section which I haunt regularly. It was a hardcover version in a special box. I picked it up and on the cover it read, Thirty Year Anniversary Edition! I was taken a-back. Has this book been around for thirty years? I first read it in 1988, it was already ten years old then, I remember that year, it was my last year in university. This little book was one of those books that helped to start me on my lifelong journey of self discovery? I was feeling very old now.
I am certain that this book finding me was one of those serendipitous moments when life jumps out in front of you; when timing aligns with your readiness to receive, and you are given a lead to follow. I was going to purchase Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, I had given my copy away long ago, and was searching for some of Carlos Casteneda’s books; guess I was feeling nostalgic. I put those books down and hurried excitedly out of the store and back to the hair salon. I settled into a chair and read a good portion while I waited for my daughter. Who knew a teenager’s haircut could take so long!
The book couldn’t have come to me at a better time. I was feeling down after a tough day and was wondering if the time I spent blogging was worthwhile; was it helping anyone besides me, or was it just an outlet for me to deposit my thoughts, meaningful only to myself? As I read the words I could feel a warm spring breeze of peacefulness enter my mind, I could almost feel it on my brow as my whole body began to relax. I had the a strange sense of completion, a feeling that it was a time to move on. This was one of the first self-help /personal development books that I had ever read, and now I felt like it may be one of the last. Had I come Full circle? Maybe it’s time for me to act and maybe this blog is the beginning. I have come to realize lately that I may have begun to fall into the “self help trap” as Mike Verano writes on his excellent blog http://tinyurl.com/cvyyn5 .
And guess what Shakti Gawain writes about in Creative Visualization? That’s right, ”the law of attraction.” She was writing about it thirty years ago! Personal development has been re-phrased and repackaged over and over again almost to the point of redundancy. Just go to the bookstore and notice how many books have the word ‘Secret’ on the cover; there are a lot! I fear that the movement is risking becoming a parody of itself.
I have yet to finish reading the book but I couldn’t wait to share my thoughts on my experience today. I have placed the book on the Amazon widget on the right sidebar of my blog if you would like to purchase it. I’m sure that you could probably find it at your local used bookstore too.
Thanks for reading.

I know about this book too, although I have not read it. It seems to be the best book on visualization and now that you reminded me about it, I’m going to check it out again.
