How to Cook Brown Rice or White Rice
This post will teach you how to cook brown or white rice. It is really quite simple once you get the hang of it and learn how your stove behaves! It just takes a bit of patience. Start cooking the rice about a half an hour before you begin cooking the remainder of your meal so it is fully steamed and ready to eat with your veggies.
-
Place the desired amount of rice in a heavy bottom high sided sauce pan or pot.
-
I don’t bother rinsing the starch away.
-
Pour water into the pot to cover the rice about one inch; up to the first knuckle of your thumb from the top of the rice.
-
Turn on the stove on high.
-
With the lid off, stir occasionally, watching carefully so the water doesn’t boil over; rice gets bubbly! That’s why a high sided pot is best.
-
Once the rice is at a full boil, turn the stove down to a rolling boil.
-
Stir regularly until all the water is absorbed and the rice thick like a porridge
-
Turn the stove off, but leave pot on the warm burner.
-
Let the boiling subside a bit.
-
Put a good tight fitting lid on.
-
Leave it for 20 minutes (all the water should be soaked up by then).
Make more rice than you need for today’s meal and refrigerate the rest. You can fry it in olive oil and garlic tomorrow!
